A coastal town located about 55 kilometers northeast of Keralas capital city Thiruvananthapuram, Varkala has varied attractions such as beach, temple and backwaters. Varkala beach stands apart from other beaches in Kerala with its breath-taking cliffs and tranquil surroundings. Natural springs with medicinal quality are another specialty of this beach. The beach is also called Paapanashini, as it is believed that bathing here cleanses ones soul. Another major attraction here is the holy pilgrimage centre Sri Janardana Swamy Temple, a 2000 year old temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
